If your Toyota has a timing belt, as opposed to a timing chain; you will need to replace the timing belt every 60,000 to 90,000 miles, depending on engine model. If your vehicle has a timing chain, like the All-New 1998 Toyota Corolla's - there is no maintenance involved with the timing belt.
REASON:
The timing belts, like many other components in your vehicle, are subject to wear and tear. Toyota has recommended replacing the timing belt BEFORE it breaks. Replacement of this timing belt is recommended every 60,000 to 90,000 miles.
If your belt breaks, your engine will not run. If you are on the highway or in an intersection and the timing belt breaks, you will have placed yourself in a dangerous situation. There could also be internal damage to the engine if the pistons make contact with the valves. If this occurs the repair cost will far exceed the replacement of the timing belt.
The cost for PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE for the timing belt may be costly, but it is small when compared to the cost of repairs after the timing belt breaks.
*any maintenance for your specific vehicle should be conducted according to the Owner's Manual that came with your vehicle at the time of purchase.
